Red Orchestra 2 uses GPU PhysX

I have been a big fan of Red Orchestra since it was first released as a mod years ago for UT2004. After several years of waiting, the beta for Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad was finally released this past week. I have been playing it non stop. Not only is the gameplay awesome, the maps are extremely well done and the graphics in the game are awesome. One of the first things i noticed when I first started up the beta in steam was that in the graphics/video settings there was an option for hardware physics. Since RO2 was done with the Unreal Engine i figured that it must support GPU PhysX effects as it is the default physics engine for the Unreal Development Kit. Further investigation into this on the Tripwire Interactive Forums confirms that the game does indeed make use of the Unreal physics and PhysX available in the Unreal Development Kit.

Several of the developers of RO2 responded on the forums stating that “We use stock UE3 Physics with only minor tweaks. Thus, we are using a combination of PhysX and Unreal Physics.” and “The hardware physics option enables PhysX hardware acceleration. There is no noticeable visual difference, but you may experience a performance gain.” Unfortunately, they did not give any details as to the extent that PhysX is used and this is most likely for the single player portion of the game only but hopefuly the single player version has some nice effects.

Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad will be available on September 13th, 2011. If you pre-order the digital deluxe edition from steam you can get into the beta now.

[COOL VIDEO] UDK PhysX Fracture Demonstration

Youtube user rubimaty has made a another cool video using the Unreal Development kit showing off PhysX based fracture meshes where a wall can be completely destroyed. Check it out below.

Physics Based Completely Destructible City Made with the Unreal Development Kit

We have seen a lot of videos of people playing around with the Unreal Development kit and its Physics Fracture and PhysX features. Most of what we have seen so far are simple tests showing  a wall being destroyed and nothing really substantial or practical. DigitalDemolition and v8matey continue to create more impressive stuff with the Unreal Development Kit. This time they have created a city that is completely destructible and physics based. Everything in the city from the roads to entire buildings can be destroyed and the pieces of debris can than be manipulated. Check out the video below and be sure to checkout and subscribe to DigitalDemolition’s and v8matey’s YouTube Pages.
