DICE to Focus on the PC with Battlefield 3, Will feature Destruction that Consoles have been holding back

GeForce.com has done a pretty nice interview with Battlefield 3 Executive Producer Patrick Bach on the development of Battlefield 3
and why they are focusing on the PC and not the console. In the interview they talk about why they are developing Battlefield 3 on the PC first and then scaling it back to work on the consoles. Patrick explains that the game they want to make with things like physics and destruction and better graphics are not possible on the consoles that are 5 years old now. This is also why PhysX and other physics features in games are still nothing more than eye candy. It is good to see at least one developer moving beyond the constraints of the consoles and being to push PC hardware once again. With the recent news that Microsoft is rumored to be looking at a 2015 release for the next generation Xbox and Sony not expected the PS4 anytime soon, seeing physics and destruction implemented more into games looks like it might take awhile before it is more than just eye candy.

From the GeForce.com interview with Patrick Bach:

GeForce.com: Are there going to be any new destructible enhancements to Battlefield 3? Bad Company did a really good job with that.

Patrick Bach: Battlefield 2 didn’t have any destruction so Battlefield 3 will be the first core title with destruction and of course we’re doing some bold moves by not only being in the more urban environments, where we’ve been before, but we’re going into cities now, so you need to have even more destruction where you can actually affect objects – the buildings around you, to make it feel like a physical world.

GeForce.com: Regarding why destructibility hasn’t been fully embraced in games, it probably has to do with the fact that, unlike Frostbite, most engines are not capable of it and for developers, it’s just cheaper to use a prebuilt engine.

Patrick Bach: Absolutely.

Completely Destructible Level Made With The UDK and APEX Destruction

Ever since GDC 2011 and the news that Apex PhysX support would be coming to the Unreal Development Kit along with the first APEX Destruction Demo From the NVIDIA Booth at GDC 2011 we have been excited about any news related to it. Apex PhysX support for the Unreal Development Kit was released in March and we have started to see some pretty cool stuff being made with it like the First APEX Physics(PhysX) Test With the Unreal Development Kit, and various Apex Destruction Demonstrations with the UDK. Now YouTube user RU1NOUS has made a video that has blown us away. he has made a completely destructible level in the UDK with the Apex Destruction tool that looks like some kind of tech demo that Nvidia would release to show off PhysX. RU1NOUS said he is doing this for his university dissertation and this is still a work in progress and plans to post an updated video soon so stay tuned for more info. It is great to see people doing things like this. Now the next step is to get this stuff implemented into actual games or tech demos that we can play with! Check out the video below and be sure to check out his YouTube page for more info and videos.

APEX Clothing on the hero character from EPIC’s Samaritan demo

Nvidia has a cool video showing off Apex Cloth physics on the character that was featured in the Unreal Engine 3 Samaritan Tech Demo Video. The clothing on the character is simulated using Apex PhysX for realistic looking clothing movements and interaction between different pieces of clothing and the surrounding environment. You can fine out more about Apex clothing and its features here and check out the video below.

From Nvidia Developer Zone Apex Clothing page:

Unity3d Wall Destruction Physics Test With Nvidia PhysX

Now this is pretty cool. YouTube user hack3m0 has made a completely destructible PhysX based wall with the Unity3d engine and shows how it can be destroyed. This is pretty cool stuff, we have been seeing a lot of these physics demonstrations with Unity3d and other products such as the Unreal Development Kit that support PhysX and other physics engines. Hopefully we start to see this stuff implemented into actual games.
