Hard Reset is a new PC exclisuve FPS from a new Polish game development studio called The Flying Wild Hog. What is great about this game is that it makes extensive use of the Havok physics engine with their own game engine called “Road Hog”. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, the developer talks about why they chose to use their own engine with Havok physics and not the Unreal Engine 3 with PhysX -”We wanted to tailor the Road Hog engine for the kind of game that we wanted to make. The idea was to have everything possible dynamic, so we are making extensive use of Havok physics. The graphics engine has fully dynamic lighting. We don’t use pre-rendered lightmaps. Every light is dynamic; it can casts shadows or be shot down. It’s just not possible with Unreal Engine 3 to run it smoothly on low-end PCs, as Road Hog does.” Check out the interview here. HardOCP.com also did a pretty nice Hard Reset Gameplay Performance Review.
Here is what the Physics settings in the game look like:
Hard Reset is available on Steam along with a nice demo you can download and play for free to test out the physics for yourself.
In the only remaining human city of Bezoar, Major Fletcher, an Army Combat Veteran and soldier of the CLN, is dragged into a conflict between two of mankind’s greatest enemies. He is to discover that nothing is what it seems to be.
Hard Reset is an action-packed, single-player shooter for the PC. With over-the-top destruction, loads of enemies, great weapon variety and a beautifully realized cyberpunk setting, Hard Reset is sure to shake up the shooter scene.
Key features:
A haunting cyberpunk / dark sci-fi setting
Fast-paced, old-school shooter gameplay
Hordes of enemies to destroy
Epic boss fights
A deep, experience-based weapon upgrade system
High-fidelity graphics with full dynamic lighting
Extensive use of physics and dynamic environments
I made and uploaded a little video from the Hard Reset demo showing off the physics. Check it out.
Bit-tech has done a really nice interview with Ageia co-founder by Manju Hegde, who now works for AMD to talk about the current state and future of GPU Physics in gaming. As the co-founder of Ageia, Hedge had hoped that GPU Physics would change the way we play games and it’s mechanics, unfortunately this has not happened and only added eye candy to games. Bit-tech in the interview talks with Hedge about why this has happened and how the future of gpu physics support in games might play out. Read the rest of the article here.
Pretty cool stuff. I came across this video today on YouTube titled “Ultimate Physics Props for Unity“. This is of course for the Unity 3D engine. Hopefully we start to see more games take advantage of and implement physics like this.
Ultimate Physics Props for Unity is a complete props package for any FPS shooter game (and not only) created with Unity 3D. All the props are destructible. This video shows off the default crate. More content in this asset store pack : barrels, large crates, containers, etc.
This is pretty cool, somebody made a game for a school project with the Unity 3D engine and physics that is a castle that can be completely destroyed by shooting cannon balls at it.
From YouTube:
Student project of the Hogeschool Leiden minor Media&ICT.
A real wooden catapult was made during this project, connected to a computer using an Arduino.
Using our game, the user could use the catapult to launch virtual amminution inside the game world, in order to besiege a castle. The game focused on realistic destruction of the castle and an impressive and interesting user experience using smoke, fire and explosions.
