Stronghold 3 Uses Havok Physics for Complete Destruction

Matt de Villiers, lead programmer on Stronghold 3, introduces Stronghold 3′s new physics engine (Havok) and its capabilities in Stronghold 3 Dev Diary #2. Unlike previous Stronghold games, Stronghold 3 uses a physics engine middle-ware for the destruction of the castle walls and every building in the game. The engine being used is Havok because according to Matt is is “the most robust”. Matt de Villiers then goes into detail about why they decided to do this and shows off using the wireframe view of the game how every building in the game is an individual physics object that can be completely destroyed. Check it out below and check out the official Stronghold 3 website for more information on the game. Stronghold 3 is coming to the PC on Oct 18, 2011. You can pre-purchase it on Steam.

The developers posted an interesting album on the official Stronghold 3 Facebook page called Physics fun with Trebs that shows some crazy physics. Check them out below-

Havok Physics Coming to the Android Platform for Gaming

Sony Ericsson and Havok have announced the availability of Havok’s product suite to Android developers. The Havok Engine will be optimized for Sony Ericsson’s Xperia™ PLAY and will feature the entire Havok Physics suite that a normal game developer would be able to use- Havok Physics, Havok Destruction, Havok AI, Havok Animation, Havok Behavior, and Havok Cloth. This is great news, as mobile gaming continues to explode we should now start to see some awesome games that take advantage of this like what you can see in the video demonstration below. It is also great to see Havok Physics itself coming to the Android platform and not PhysX from NVIDIA which they would probably require a Tegra processor to run it. Check out the Havok game engine demo on Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY below.

From the Sony Ericsson Developer Blog
:

Sony Ericsson and Havok have announced the availability of Havok’s product suite to Android developers, optimized for the Sony Ericsson’s revolutionary Xperia™ PLAY. Havok reigns as the preferred tools and interactive software partner to the world’s best developers. As part of its overall support for the Android platform, Havok has a build of its product line optimised for the Xperia™ PLAY that is ready for licensing by Android developers.

Havok Physics Demonstration at IDF San Francisco 2010

A pretty awesome video has been uploaded to YouTube showing a Havok Physics demonstration that was shown at the 2010 Intel Developer Forum in San Fransisco. The video shows some nice Havok Physics based Cloth simulation and destruction physics effects. The video shows the Havok Cloth simulation with a side-by-side comparison showing what cloth on a character would look like without Havok Physics and then with Havok Physics simulation. The end of the video shows off the destruction effects where a train is shown going over a completely destructible bridge that is destroyed with a rocket launcher. Check out the video below. the second video shows the start of the demo with Cloth Physics on an Ogre like character.

Havok Physics GDC 2010 Destruction and Cloth Demo’s

Some awesome new Havok Physics destruction and cloth demos have been shown off at GDC 2010. The first video is showing Havok Destruction in action where pretty much everything can be destroyed. Stone and wood can be fractured, and metal such as a barrel can be deformed as if it were real and entire buildings and structures can be destroyed. The video shows how with Havok Physics Destruction you can create truly “Dynamic Game Environments”. The destructible bridge demo we recently posted about in the “Awesome Video Game Physics Destruction Videos You Need to Watch” is also showed at a different angle in this demo video to show off “Large Scale Destruction”. The video finishes up with “High Fidelity Building Destruction” showing how you can make buildings that can be completely destroyed or have certain sections blown away.

This is definitely awesome stuff, anyone that has been playing Battlefield: Field Bad Company 2, knows how destructible environments really change the way we play games and add an all new wow factor, imagine in the future when physics based destruction is used more and more in games.

If you are fascinated by physics based destruction be sure to check out “Awesome Video Game Physics Destruction Videos You Need to Watch”

There is also a new Havok Cloth demo showing off realistic cloth.
