Epic Games has released a cool video showing off the new features in the Unreal Engine 3. Most of the features we have already seen in the Samaritan tech demo and also shows some cool new features such as the editor and mobile development features for Android and iOS along with some pretty looking test levels we have not seen before. Unfortunately just like with the Samaritan demo, physics is not a main showcase even though the video claims to be bringing “next gen” features into focus. They do briefly show off the Apex Clothing features that we saw in the APEX Clothing on the hero character from EPIC’s Samaritan demo but not much else in the way of physics or PhysX like destruction. This is strange and disappointing as the Unreal Engine 3 now has full Apex support and we have been seeing some cool stuff being done with it like completely destructible levels which are no doubt one of the “next gen” features of games we are eagerly awaiting for. You can check out the video below.
NVIDIA’s APEX PhysX technology has been integrated into the unreal engine along with DX11 and now ships with the Unreal Development Kit. This is pretty exciting news, hopefully we start to see some cool games or at least tech demos showing off this stuff such as the GDC 2011 APEX Destruction Demo From the NVIDIA Booth. We have been seeing people play around with fracture meshes and PhysX objects but nothing on this level. Games have yet to make use of PhysX technology for anything more than some nice eye candy, hopefully this will start to change that.
* NVIDIA APEX technology enables artists to quickly generate physically simulated clothing and destructible environments. For more information on APEX, please visit: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/apex.html
The official HD(720p) video of the jaw dropping Unreal Engine 3 Samaritan Tech Demo has been uploaded to YouTube. We have been pretty excited about this demo since we read the GDC 2011 session info which states that the demo is going to show off the full NVIDIA APEX PhysX suite of artist friendly tools and runtime libraries (Clothing, Destruction, Particles and Turbulence). The video was shown behind closed doors at GDC 2011 and a shacky cam video was released of the presentation, but now the official 720p video has been uploaded to YouTube by IGN. Check it out below. We still do not have much info about the Apex PhysX features that have been implemented into the demo and unfortunately PhysX and Physics in general was not the main showcase for this demo but rather the next generation graphics. But we can tell that it looks like the main character’s clothes are simulated with PhysX and the smoke/fog that is present throughout the demo could be simulated with PhysX turbulence.
Well it is been a while since I have posted and need to get back into the swing of things, so I think posting these awesome UDK Apex PhysX destruction videos would be a good start.
