Gothic 4 Arcania Will use Nvidia PhysX Instead Of Havok Physics

PC Games Hardware is reporting that game developer Jowood which is currently developing Gothic 4 Arcania will be using PhysX technology for game physics instead of using Havok Physics. However they do not plan to make any vendor specific optimizations being planned such as having different PhysX features that are only available on NVIDIA video cards or implementing different PhysX features for users running an NVIDIA video card that would be able to do GPU PhysX calculations.

Nvidia’s Physx apparently becomes more and more popular. A Jowood Community Manager wrote that Gothic 4 Arcania won’t use Havok but Physx. But currently there are no one-sided optimizations planned.

In December Jowood Community Manager ‘Megalomanic’ already said during a Question and Answer event in the forum of worldofplayers.de that Arcania – A Gothic Tale will utilize Nvidia’s Physx for physics calculations. Now he dispelled the doubts of users who feared that owners of Radeon graphics cards, which don’t support the technology on their GPU, might have a disadvantage.

According to his post in the official Jowood forum there aren’t any plans to make manufacturer related optimizations at the moment. Since Physx actually would be just a physics engine and thus just code algorithms which are used to calculate the physics effects, it is possible to optimize those calculations on Nvidia graphics cards. Megalomanic also says this would be common practice in matters of graphics, too. But as Physx is regarded, the developers are currently not planning optimizations for any manufacturer.
